4.2 Establishing Operations

One particular class of verbal responses does not seem to be controlled by a prior discriminative stimulus. This type of verbal behavior is controlled by what is called an establishing operation. The establishing operation will be presented in greater detail later; at present, let it suffice to say that it is an environmental event or operation that momentarily increases the reinforcing effectiveness of some particular reinforcement.
