Spraying water is generally considered a good punishment stimulus for cats because it is immediate and therefore has a stronger effect on their behaviour. Unfortunately, cats do not respond quickly to the most common reward stimulus, treats, as immediately as dogs. Furthermore, maybe it is my lack of knowledge, but I fail to think how a reward stimulus would be applied to lower a behavioural excess with animals.
I agree about the reward stimulus – would that apply when trying to reinforce a positive behaviour rather than stop a behaviour from occurring?
This lesson showed me why it is important to implement the intervention only after collecting baseline data. Measuring behavior during both phases helps determine whether the intervention is effective.
