This is when I believe being objective is very important. Being a parent can be very emotional and if a child is not behaving the way you intend, you must look at yourself and see what you are doing wrong; this is very difficult to do for some people.
Hi Diane
Thanks for sharing, it is true that being objective is very important. I totally agree that if we being emotional, there are more difficulties for both side or the situation is getting more worse that we unexcepted. Wish you have a great learning journey !
Alice
I definitely agree with you. It can be really hard to stay objective, especially as a parent, taking a step back and looking at our own actions is so important because it helps us understand what we can change to support the child better.
For my understanding of purpose of baseline, is the behavior has been recognized, and the consequence has been followed. The consequence has two meanings or actions, which prediction of behavior or situation changes or not, brings the intervention implement or not.
I think you explained this well, and I agree with the purpose of the baseline. Baseline is really about seeing what the behavior looks like before we change anything in the environment. Helps us understand the current pattern and gives us something to compare to once interventions have been implemented.
The purpose of baseline is to give us a clear picture of how often or how intensely a behavior occurs before any intervention is introduced. It acts as a reference point so we can truly measure if the intervention is making a difference. Without it, we’d be guessing instead of making informed decisions.
I agree, baseline data is essential because it gives us an objective starting point to compare against. It ensures that any changes we see during the intervention can be confidently attributed to the strategies used rather than assumptions.
From what I understand is, that if I am in class and a student calls out answers without raising their hands during a lesson, this behavior will not stop. Therefore, I have to try something like praising hand raising and see if this strategy works. Before I do this I need to find my baseline, How many times does the student call out during a lesson of 50 minutes and then I can see if the praising strategy works.
Purpose:
The baseline helps me see how often and intensely my kids yell at me when I tell them to do something before I try any strategies to change it. It shows me what their “normal” behaviour looks like right now, without any intervention.
Prediction:
If the yelling continues at the same level without making any changes, I can predict that the behaviour will likely keep happening just as often, and it might even get worse over time. This would mean more stress at home and less effective communication between me and my kids. It is my job as a parent to look at why its happening and look at myself to possibly change something for myself as well as for them.
This lesson helped me understand that a baseline has two important purposes. First, it help us describe the current behavior and second, it helps us predict what might happen if nothing changes. This makes it easier to see whether an intervention is actually effective.
