This tutorial is based on a book of the same name written by Norman Peterson, Ph.D. and first published by Behavior Associates, Inc. in 1978. That book was a programmed instructional text designed to introduce the reader to the key concepts of B.F. Skinner’s analysis of human language (as outlined in his 1957 book, Verbal Behavior).

Skinner’s book presented a radically different approach to the analysis of language, and had two major components. First, it introduced a set of new concepts for classifying and analyzing verbal behavior. Second, it then used these new concepts to develop an innovative and profound analysis and interpretation of factors that account for the behavior of an individual speaker. Much of the power and intricacies of that analysis were lost if the student did not have mastery over the introductory material. Dr. Peterson’s book was an attempt to provide a way for students to quickly and thoroughly master that introductory material, and this tutorial builds on Dr. Peterson’s outstanding work to present a fully interactive, multimedia introduction to verbal behavior.
