Improving Conversational Skills of College Students with ASD
Amanda Karsten3.67 out of 5(3)Transitioning to college represents a significant milestone in young adulthood, with early adjustments impacting well-being during and beyond the college years. Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) face particular challenges due to social differences, potentially leading to academic struggles, peer conflicts, loneliness, and missed opportunities for future success. This presentation from the 2019 Michigan Autism Conference discusses research findings and lessons from recent efforts to assess and address the social deficits of college students with ASD.

Establishing Generative Learning for Children with Autism
Mark Sundberg4.80 out of 5(5)Typically developing children experience a rapid growth in language skills between ages 2 and 3, but many children with autism struggle with this developmental milestone. This may be due to difficulties in benefiting from generative learning, where existing skills facilitate the acquisition of new ones without direct teaching. Strategies for helping children with autism harness the power of generative learning, identified through milestones in the VB-MAPP assessment, are discussed in this presentation from the 2020 Michigan Autism Conference.

The Generalization of Mands
Caio Miguel3.00 out of 5(1)The mand relation, a foundational verbal operant driven by a motivating operation (MO), enables individuals to make requests, directly benefiting the speaker and fostering other behavioral developments, including the reduction of problem behavior. This presentation from the 2019 Michigan Autism Conference explores how the mand’s occurrence, shaped by various discriminative stimuli (SDs), allows for its generalization across different MOs and SDs, and how the same MO can lead to new mand topographies.

Evaluating the Reliability and Sensitivity of the VB-MAPP as an Outcome Measure in Autism Research
Amin Lotfizadeh & Khrystle MontallanaThis study, presented at the 2019 Michigan Autism Conference, explored the inter-rater reliability of the VB-MAPP, a widely used assessment and curriculum guide in autism interventions, and tested its effectiveness as an outcome measure for low-intensity behavioral interventions. The findings show good reliability for milestones and moderate reliability for barriers, with some variability in individual domains. When compared to the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale, the VB-MAPP demonstrated a greater sensitivity to detecting gains from low-dosage interventions.
